thumbnail menues with categories, make it horizontal?

Hi all,
the thumbnail menu with categories, works perfect. But i would like to have it go horizontal, not vertical. Any chance?
Or as an alternative...
can the thumbnail menue simplex be "pimped up" to be category sensitive?
