Hi,

I have an urgent requirement to display our Pano VR tours using an iPad (in an exhibition arena with no wifi).

Please can you advise the best way forwards ?

For some reason we are unable to download and install Documents onto our iPads, is there an alternative ?

For example, can I create a tour and put that into a PDF and from there, have our iPad read the PDF ?

(sorry, I don't have an iPad myself, so I'm unable to do any tests, my client is the one who has an iPad).

Many thanks.

Hi Jez,
My app of choice is iBook's.
It supports most features and of course you can have many panos in the book.

Hi Hopki,

Because I don't have an iPad myself, I have to ask;

Does iBooks read html files (i.e. as per my understanding of Documents, one copies over the folder with the index.html file and tile image folders etc of the Pano) ?

Does iBooks work the same way ?

If not, what does one copy to iBooks ?

Hi Jez,
You do need a Mac as they have iBooks Author as a default application.
You create an HTML widget for iBooks then just drag and drop it into one of the templates.
Very quickly and without too much or a learning curve you can produce an iBook with many panoramas in.
When creating an iBook using the author you can plug in an iPad to text the book.
This transfers the iBook to the iPad ready for you to use.
See iBooks Tip page.

I used to use Goodreader app for this. A few years ago I was having the same problem.
Goodreader would unzip a Zip folder containing the HTML project and play it perfectly. The only addition needed was a close button on the main pano interface to tell Goodreader to quit what it was doing and return to the root menu.

I have a whole catalogue of tours and object tours on an old iPad that still work. I've not looked at the new version of Goodreader to see how it performs though.

I should have another look myself as I need to prepare some offline things again soon.

Good luck

Hi Guys,
The Documents App would be perfect if it did not switch between fullscreen and normal everything you clicked a hotspot.
I have e-mailed them asking them to have the option to use a "long press". Although they responded Documents still has the same behaviour.
But would be good for cardboard as you don't touch the screen.
Cheers,

try to save the files folder in your iPad and open the index.html file with firefox, at least works with an Android Tablet.

Hi Manuel,
That’s an Android trick that does not work on iOS.
Did you get any issues with the browser not opening the pano.
If so did you adjust any browser setting to allow local content?

Have you considered using Adobe PhoneGap https://phonegap.com/ to create a development app that you could load onto the iPad.

All you need is an Apple Developer license and PhoneGap is free. Once you've built the Virtual Tour it doesn't take long to build the app and then download it to the iPad.

thanks tony, that sounds very interesting.

that means that it is possible to build a "stand-alone app" from a pano2vr file/package?!

now i have to see how to get a developer licence ...

thx,

Hi Wiso,

Yes. I'm just doing a new build now of a test tour that I'm going to use for a tutorial on how to build a PhoneGap Pano2VR Tour App for iOS.

Are you working on a Mac? I only ask as it's easier if you are.

hi tony,
mainly on windows, because of a more powerful pc. but it is no problem to change to my macbook-air with the pano2vr files for resuming or finishing the work.

i would be very glad if you will tell me your experience about your tests with phonegap and genrating the app.

i will also try phonegap soon with a simple photo tour

thx,
best regards,
wiso

p.s.: in a rush i found this tutorial - which shows the generating of an android app from an html file in phonegap :

Hi Wiso,

Publishing from PhoneGap to Android is simple. For the iPad you will need to register as an Individual Developer; you can find more information here https://developer.apple.com/programs/enroll/ the cost is $99 USD a year. To generate the build you will have to create the appropriate certificates.

I'm using the Cloud build option and QR code for installing on the device. Works fine, just make sure you add a the config.xml file to the folder containing your Pano2VR output.

Here's some examples from the upcoming tutorial I'm writing. The original output from Pano2VR https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com ... index.html it's a pretty simple interface :-)

And here's a video of the built PhoneGap App, wrapped around the Pano2VR output above, running on iPhone 6 https://youtu.be/Ug9ScdH5mAk It looks and works the same on the iPad.

That's quite an old video, there have been quite a few changes since then. There's a good tutorial on Lynda.com https://www.lynda.com/PhoneGap-tutorial ... 880-2.html
