The better the lens, the better the result.

But to try this out you could get one of the cheapest point&shoot cameras and mount a "peephole fisheye" on it, as described here:

I don't think you can do it any cheaper than that ;)

Or you could just use the camera as is, but that requires you to shoot a huge amount of pictures because of the rather long focal length on cheap digital cameras.

Yes, I have seen this type of thing before. Very unique. A fellow over in the Worldwide Panorama forum shot one like that and even stitched it. Used ptviewer.jar to display.

And I really do sometimes think about just why I have spent several thousand dollars on lenses and cameras to achieve the same effect.

The most important thing to look for in a camera is that you can turn off auto-exposure and auto-white-balance otherwise you'll have real problems when you try to stitch your sequence of shots together.

We were Nikon fans for many years.. started with a Nikormat 35mm and a Nikonous underwater camera. We continued our Nikon effort by switching to Nikon 950 and 990.

We studied the digital camera market for a year before deciding to move to Canon 350d, 20d and our latest 5d. If we needed to do it again.. yes our opinion Canon is the way to go.

We use the Sigma 8 f4 and Sigma 8 f3.5 lenses for work on all cameras because of the interchangable universal lens mount. 1 lens fits all our cameras.
