I like Flash better than HTML5

Post by kirby » Mon Feb 18, 2013 7:01 pm

Just for some context here, I have not been following the evolution of Pano2VR v3 to v4 as closely as I should have been. As a result, some of my observations may be ... well.. wrong. Let's see.

A few examples come to mind:
- I like that there's a download/preview mode in Flash
- I like that Flash offers transitions between multiple panos.
- I prefer the overall feel/control of the flash tour (though this can likely be addressed within the settings).
- The controls of HTML5 are inverted relative to the default Flash tours

I'm perfectly willing to admit that my personal preference may not be echoed throughout the greater population. As a result, my question is: am I making a mistake displaying the Flash tours with *HTML5 fallback* or should I be flipping this around?

Ok.. your comments are fair. We use both HTML5 and Flash with transitions suitable for android/idevice smart phone using web browsers and tablets supporting Webkit 533.10 through 534.30. Android 2.3.3 -2.3.7 Gingerbread 10 represent 45.4% user base AND 4.0.3 - 4.0.4 29% user base (as of 4 Feb 2013)

See forum page for idevice/android browser lisitng:
http://gardengnomesoftware.com/forum/vi ... 729#p31729

Pano2vr Output order using

Flash
Visuals tab [x] Enable transitions| Cross Dissolve| Transition time 2.0s| [xxx] zoom in/ out/ Wait for / Zoom Fov 50 | Speed 2/
Advance tab MOUSE [_] Disable [_] Invert control | Mouse wheel [x] Invert // [x] Disable in Browser
AND NO Flash html page

HTML5
Mobile Tab Solutions Max sreen 1025/CF 960 | max 960 /700 | max 480 /416
HTML Tab page Full Screen [x]
[x] filename.swf in Flash fall back entry [x] prefer flash and [x] flash fallback player

Performance range will vary greatly due to the users internet connection speed. My HTC EVO 4g smartphone and iPad 3 performs good using a Wi-Fi connection speed 12mbps.

What is the general consensus for Flash vs. HTML5 these days? Is it bad form to use Flash with HTML5 fallback?

Will any of the above features (preview, transitions, etc) be possible in HTML5?

If you care about mobile devices you will end up with HTML5
If you wish to view on a proper computer stick with Flash as HTML5  is still lagging and every browser deals with the code differently.

Of course this is a personal opinion....

Thanks Smooth and 360Texas. I am using Flash with HTML5 fallback plus mobile settings for mobile devices so I think I have the gamut covered.

Essentially, I'm just looking to make sure that by using Flash as my default, I am not committing a cardinal (i.e. silly/short-sighted) sin? Despite my preferences, am I going against the grain here?

Actually its HTML5 that contains the Flash fallback features. In a year or so.. we will see trends towards HTML5 or Flash. Using both now you probably will be covering most all the hardware out there.

Yes, but Pano2VR let's me use Flash; otherwise, use HTML5 (that's what i meant by fallback). Is this set up okay to use?

I'd imagine in the coming years, Flash will be phased out completely.

As I understand the process... the sniffer code checks the device for a flash viewer... if it does find it.. it will deliver flash content. If it does not find flash .. it will deliver HTML5 content.

Adobe flash will be supported for MANY years for desktops and tablets. Only issue is that Adobe has stopped supporting flash for only smart phones.

AND we are only talking about BROWSERS for smartphones.

Current Safari and android browsers support can be found on our list of Operating systems and Webkit browser

A few years ago we did a pano of the SpaceX Dragon space capsule. It has a bunch of transitions, showing the capsule with ports open and closed, plus with and without payload. Here is the link: http://www.spacex.com/panorama/index.html. This was done with FPP. I have not seen any html5 examples of this kind of transition. Is it possible? And if not, is it possible to use Pano2VR to do a similar Flash version?

I'm using HTML with Flash fallback in as many cases as I can to maximise compatibility. I do not like the lack of subtle loading transitions in HTML. Anomalies with sounds working or not working. Etc, etc.
I have to build 2 skins for each project to deal with the differences plus a 3rd skin that optimises everything for GoodReader.
I can't see me giving that up anywhere soon either. I'm even back to V3 because I stand by my points that V4 just is too HTML biased right now and the new features it offers, like video pinning just are not as robust as I need for my clients.
It'll all change, V4 will continue being developed and I dare say the HTML5 compatibility issues will all be ironed out.
I just know that right now I don't want to start having to explain to clients why certain features don't work on their device so I stick to what is consistently safe and work within those parameters for now.

Totally. Didn't I mention that? damn.
I did on my blog post. HTML only as it was a tester for me, not a client. More specifically, this was designed for local ipad use.
