missing codec

I'm trying to use a 360 video in a panoramic, but I'm getting a missing codec error. The video is a mp4 file compiled under H.264.

Should I be using a different format or is there a codec that I am missing? Is it a standard codec that is normally present, or will those wanting to view the 360 video also have to install it?

Hi Neil,
Windows natively can not display larger videos and you need to install the K-lite Codec Pack.
https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
Then you will be good to go.

I always wondered about K-lite codec packs.

Which one do you think would work best ? Really.

Basic - maybe try first ? no player
Standard - has player

I went with the full package. That did get it to view in Pano2VR, but I wasn't able to get it to work in the browser. I'm going to have to figure out why.

Was also wondering, which one Hopki or any forum member put on their PC and which one they put on his Mac.

Hi Neil,
The HTML5 output uses the native browser support for the video which is not great.
3840 x 1920 is about max with 2048 x 1024 being robust and play on most modern devices.
It was not that long ago even 2048 x 1024 would not play.

Hi Dave,
This is a Windows issue only.
On my little MS Surface Go, I had the same issue with 5K 360 video.
I seem to remember I installed the Basic pack on this page: https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

To be clear when you try to open a 360 video in Pano2VR viewer you see the missing codec error.
This is because Pano2VR uses the native OS video support and Windows just can not display videos of this size.
Once the pack is installed you should be able to see the video in Pano2VR.

But for the output, this is a different issue and now you are facing the native video support of the browser.
As said start with 2048 x 1024px, that should play ok, you should be able to crank it up to 3840 x 1920px, but my own experience is this will not play on mobile devices.

Cheers,
