Hi,

Anybody tested the new Samsung Gear 360 camera ?
Looks in specs better then the Ricoh Tetha.

Specs:
Phote resolution: 7776x3888
Video resolution: 3840x1920

Only thing that is a bummer is that the smartphone control app only works on 6 mobile devices and the iPhone is not one of them ...
(Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note 5)

I did read about the camera that all control and stitching is done outside the camera in the app on one of those 6 Samsung phones. Buying the camera also means for me buying a new phone.

I think I wait for the next camera up for release.

There are three:

GoPro 360 (is rumored)
Nikon KeyMission 360 (also 4k)
LG 360 (2k)

I would wait for the Nikon KeyMission 360

But strangely Nikon focus on the Video only showing up
Rather bad action videos on YouTube without stabilization

But it is like the knowledge of fisheye lenses
They just docent know that you use it for 360 Panorama

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-produc ... index.page
Nikon surprises by dropping a 360 camera just when this kind of filming begins to take off, which we think is very funny!
Youtube, Facebook, smart devices and much more products and software already supports 360 so this is a category we promise will take off shortly.
The first camera in the range are KeyMission 360 - a portable action camera that can record video in 360 degrees and 4K UHD.
By combining these different types of relevant technology in a camera Nikon gives a much needed boost to the market,
where the products have often had limited ability to record video in 360 degrees, making this technology available to the majority of customers.

KeyMission 360 has a combined sensor / lens on both sides of the camera.
The images are combined in camera to create a realistic, high resolution image 360 °.
The camera is waterproof to 30 meters depth without separate underwater housing. It is also very durable, and can withstand dust, shock and low temperatures without problems.
It also reduces the effects of camera shake thanks to reliable electronic vibration reduction is activated through apps during playback, making films sharp and clear.
It is designed to be used in all the different challenging circumstances that it is expected that an action cam to cope.
While it is easy to use and allows the user to move freely, so that you can shoot a variety of sporting and outdoor recreational activities.
And i cannot find any info about the Still images size and quality

The Nikon KeyMission 360 looks to have a very heavy price tag.
In the UK:
Theta = £299.00
Gear360 = £349.00

Her tis a time-lapse from the Gear360.
You need Chrome or Firefox.
If your internet has the puff you can crank it up to 4K.

However...
The Gear outputs a MP4 in time lapse mode so you can not get to the individual images.
The Theta on the other hand you can set for 5K images so you can have a higher resolution time laps video.
Just a bit more work as you need to assemble the frames in Photoshop.

Wow, bring it on.
The first pricing that was bounced about was more £1200.00.
I guess they have seen the likes of the Theta and Gear360 and brought it more in line with these. :D

Regarding the Gear360...My 1st few trials for stills for pano2vr have shown poor stitching ... not happy with the unit ... promise of higher res compared to ThetaS totally negated by stitching errors....also have been spoilt by the great form factor of the ThetaS .... pocketable and uncamera like...meaning the ThetaS is much better for tight spots and informal group shots....Hopki...if you've worked out what has to be done to get clean stitching on the Gear360...please advise

Hi MGreen,
The Gear360 is no good for small rooms etc, the lenses are just to far apart.
However outside and on a tripod/selfie stick then its ok.
If you have a look at my time-lapse video you will see a grey line in the sand.
This is where the two halves meet up.
Stitching is then not an issue.

I tested Samsung Gear 360 last February and my very first notice was that the image quality is “decent”, better than Theta S (my point of view in February), but the stitching was bad in that time – consider that it was the very first version of the stitching procedure 0.2.22 . Samsung team working on Gear360 did a surprisingly good job in very short time period . Regarding the latest Hopkis's comprehensive test the camera is with very nice output not- outdoor and not close objects. I have got mine a while ago for 339 euros in Austria and there were a number on the stock.

Nikon Key mission 360 … I am in touch with the Nikon and I was offered to receive the test camera last April but it was postponed – yes the price was set to be ~ 1000 euros, it is intended to be action camera for a very tough use. “Between us”... my conclusion is that the Nikon delayed the camera because of the low price of the competitors... so there is “something” going to happen (sounded like a mystery... hm... ?) … anyway I ma going to receive the camera before the official release – don't ask me when, but I was told “maybe August. I can now only speculate – the lower price of the camera ...or even sci-fi speculation 8 K sensor as the surprise... really only the speculation (I believe in lower price). Anyway here is now a race who is going to beat the 4K res. for consumers “class”.
But (!) even the price of 1000 euros – there are some “pro” of Key mission vs Gear 360 … more robust, more “open-sourced” (not dependent on Samsung devices exclusively) and better geometry which can result in better stitching result with close objects.

Theta 4K is also on its way... (just my logic not hearing from the sources)
