Action cameras have fish eye lenses
the Sony-HDR-AS100V have 170 degre without steady shot activated
image quality are not up to a DSLR but they are small and handy.

i think that the smart phones will take over in a few years

See the test Pano2VR5 on this link

When played on a iPad some of the pop up images behaves abnormally, they are floating around in the panorama in front and back of the embedded images and the sound have to be started manually and loops infinitely

Edit: may be the iPad runs out of memory, there was too many pages open and to many apps open too,
closed them and now the pano seems to behave normally.

There should be a simple way to close open apps and webpages on iPhones and iPads
All Right i know it is a bad Apple there is always a bit missing
