Which turntable to buy?

Hi,

I'm new to Object2VR and would like to buy a turntable to start creating 3D models.

I just went through the supported turntables list at: https://ggnome.com/object2vr-turntables/

Being based in China, I couldn't find any of these brands so I'm looking into other options.

Will turntables that are not officially supported by Object2VR still work to get the job done? And if so, will the process be way more difficult?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks,
Roland

Hi Roland,
What size table, what will you be shooting?
How many columns will you do for each object?
From this, it may help to advise.

Hi Hopki,

At first I will buy a table that is suitable for shooting small objects such as shoes and mobile phones.

Not sure about the number of columns. What do you suggest in case I would like to include the top and bottom view of the product as well?

Cheers,
Roland

Hi Roland,
The number of columns depends on how much detail the object has, for example, a soft toy may only need 12 images while a detailed artefact could use 50 to 72 images.
But if you want to shoot rows then you need something with a method to move the camera up and down keeping the same distance to the focal point of the subject.
This could add a lot to the price of the table you use.

Hi Hopki,

Thanks for clearing that up.

If I buy a turntable that's not in the supported by Object2VR list, will I still be able to use it with Object2VR or will it take a very long to create a single 3D object?

Cheers,
Roland

Hi Roland,
Object2VR supports a few modes that let you work with cameras and table that are not directly supported.
As an example, if a table triggers your camera then you can link the camera to Object 2VR and when a new image is generated Object2VR will bring it into the software.
You can even use a watched folder, as an image appears in the folder Object2VR will bring it in.

Three or Four years ago I wrote my own turntable control that works with Object2vr for one of the cheap Amazon sold 360 turntables. It really was not that hard. They had an open source example in .net or c# and I used the examples that came with Object2vr to work out the language. That being said, with enough information and time, you can connect just about any turntable to objectvr, but it might not be your best option. It takes time and trial and error to get it done.

You can see examples of the turntable controls in the GardenGnomeSoftware folder and then Turntables. If it looks like a foreign language, and I do not mean german, then I would say don't start there, but if you can make sense of it, you will be able to make the wrapper to control turntables.
