Is there a way on mouse down to Move To Default View and when that action is complete to trigger a second action to show an animated gif / png or change the scr of an image over the top of the vr container div ?

Not is Object2VR right now.
But you can use an external loader element to open an animated GIF.
Even though the skin editor can import gif it will not play an animated gif.
For this you will need the external loader.
