No pano2VR does not use animated Gifs, however you can use swf files.

They need to be self contained swf files, just animations, you can add the loading text in the normal way using the $p placeholder. Use the Add SWF button in the skin editor, just make sure the swf box is the same size as the SWF file.

Hi you need Flash to make it with, you are probably better off trying to find already built loaders.
I am having a revamp with my computer systems at the moment and working from a Mac Book, but hopefully in the next week or two I will make a couple when i am sorted.
