Yes, I have seen this type of thing before. Very unique. A fellow over in the Worldwide Panorama forum shot one like that and even stitched it. Used ptviewer.jar to display. And I really do sometimes think about just why I have spent several thousand dollars on lenses and cameras to achieve the same...

Pano2qtvr will let you convert a equirectangular 2:1 like 2000 x 4000 dimensioned image into 6 separate cube faces. Left, back, right, front, top and bottom.
